The Weight of the Resurrection of Jesus
John 11:25-26 (ESV)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
The weight of the cross is crushing to every person who has ever sinned. The weight of the cross is crushing because we cannot possibly pay for the sin we committed against God. A quick test, have you every lied? Ever had anger because you didn’t get your way? Have you ever talked back to your parents at any time in your life? Maybe you haven’t always been honest about your taxes? If you are guilty of any of these sins, as I am, you would be guilty and deserving of the punishment from a pure and holy God.
The good news is, if you trust Jesus as your savior and Lord, Jesus carried the weight of your sin that would have crushed you for eternity. The crushing punishment that you deserve, Jesus took on the punishment that was for you on the cross.
The weight of the cross is devastating at every level. Nothing beautiful about a blood-soaked torture device that Jesus endured for your and my sin. The cross is a horrific sight, it took over 100 years after the last known Roman crucifixion for any artist to make an image of the cross because it was so horrific. Jesus being the only person to be perfect and not deserving of any punishment, he suffered the torment so that you and I would have life.
Those who surrender their life to Christ must understand that the weight of the cross was outweighed by the weight of God’s glory. Essentially Jesus is GREATER than the cross! Jesus who knew no sin, took on sin, so that the glorious nature of a perfect God man could be placed upon us.
The weight of the resurrection is this, that the grace of God would cover those who would humbly confess of their sin and would follow Jesus as their Lord. Think about it this way, would you want to be under the weight of the cross or the weight of the resurrection. Life is found in the resurrection. The resurrection displays Jesus’ power over death, the grave, and sin. While the cross displays the penalty for those who pridefully think they can carry the weight of the cross. Choose the resurrection and let God’s grace lift you from the sin that will bind you for eternity.
